The Secret of the Dove’s Mission In this week’s Parasha, we read about Noach’s unusual choice to send first a raven and then a dove to assess whether the floodwaters had receded. But according to the Midrash, there’s an even stranger twist: Og, the future king of Bashan, survived the Flood by clinging to the outside of the Teivah (Ark), thanks to Noach’s mercy. Og agreed to become Noach’s servant, receiving food and air through a small opening in the Ark. So why, then, did Noach send birds to scout the land? Wouldn’t it have been simpler to ask Og, who had a firsthand view from his place outside the Teivah? Moreover, the Teivah had already landed on Mount Ararat, and Og could have easily descended and returned with information. This mysterious sequence raises fascinating questions.
