Why did God destroy the generation of the Flood but only disperse the generation of the Tower of Babylon — and what does that have to do with the destiny of the Jewish people and all of humanity? In this shiur we dive deep into Moshe Rabbeinu's farewell prophecy in Ha'azinu and Devarim, working through some of the most profound verses about God's relationship with the nations and with the Jewish people. We start with a burning question: the generation of the Flood was completely wiped out, but the generation of the Tower of Babylon was only dispersed and given 70 languages. Why the difference? Rashi's answer is stunning — God kept humanity alive because from those souls would come the Jewish nation, and it could have been many families, many Avrahams. Only Avraham chose the mission. That's the whole reason the world was preserved. We then work through the verse that says 'God's portion is His nation, Jacob is the rope of His inheritance.' We unpack the Ibanza's beautiful teaching that a rope — shazar, twisted strands — gets its strength from being wound together. Avraham is one strand, Yitzchak is two, and Yaakov and all his children become the unbreakable three-ply cord of the covenant. That covenant is not just for us — it's the mission to bring God consciousness and morality to all 70 nations of the world, which is exactly what Rashi says we should be thinking about every single time we say Shema. We also look at the eagle analogy in verse 11 — how Hashem approaches His nation with patience and compassion, rustling His wings between branch and branch to gently wake the young before landing. That's the story of every prophet, every sign through history, and honestly the story of every Yid finding their way back today. We close thinking about Devarim 30 and the promise that in the end of days, every single Jew comes home — and what an incredibly heartwarming thing that is to meditate on.
