Furthermore, the Torah specifies they are the "sons of Aharon"; this is a seemingly redundant phrasing? Impurity and the Eternal Soul The Torah prohibits a Kohen from becoming impure “l’nefesh” (to a soul), rather than simply saying “l’met” (to a corpse). If the soul is spiritual and never truly dies, why does the Torah link ritual defilement to the nefesh specifically? Also, why the prohibition begins with the act of becoming impure rather than the mandate to remain holy as stated 2 verses further, reversing the logical order of sanctity? Grammar and the Individual The first verse contains a striking grammatical anomaly; it begins in the plural—“v’amarta aleihem” (say to them)—but concludes in the singular—“lo yitama” (he shall not become impure).
