The Secret Meaning of the Terumah The Parasha opens with a powerful message—every individual is obligated to contribute financially to the building of the Mishkan. On the surface, this appears to be an act of Tzedakah, yet this very mitzvah is already mentioned in last week's Parasha and again in Parashas Re’eh. Why, then, does the Torah expound on it here—not just once, but three times? Rashi clarifies that there were actually three distinct Terumos: one to finance the base of the posts, one for offerings on the Mizbeach, and one for building materials. Yet, while the first two were mandatory, the third was voluntary. But if the first two were obligatory, why does the Pasuk specify that they should only be taken from generous donors? Even more puzzling is the fact that Bnei Yisrael had just acquired vast wealth from the Egyptians who drowned in the sea. Logically, they were obligated to give Maaser (a tenth of their wealth). Why didn’t Hashem command them to use those funds for the Mishkan’s construction?
