On December 17, 2001, Rubin was driving home from Jerusalem when gunmen opened fire on his car. He was shot in the leg, his young son was shot in the head, and their vehicle was riddled with bullets. Rubin recounts how the car suddenly started when he desperately needed to escape — only for his mechanic to later ask a chilling question: “Why can’t we start that car?” Rubin says there were 49 bullet holes in the vehicle and that the bullet that struck his son missed his brainstem by just one millimeter. He explains why the experience transformed his understanding of faith, miracles and purpose. The conversation also explores the psychological trauma children can experience after terrorism, the creation of the Shiloh Israel Children’s Fund, and how the organization expanded its work after the October 7 attacks. Rubin discusses the call his team received from Israel’s Ministry of Defense, the challenge of helping traumatized Israeli children and families, and the therapies used to help children process experiences they may not be able to express in words.
