The incident of the golden calf is in the weekly portion, therefore the reading from the prophets corresponds to a story of idol worship. Elijah the prophet in order to try to stem the tide of Israel worshiping foreign gods, calls everyone together to what could be called "the contest of the gods." He challenges the priests of Ba'al to see who can bring fire down from heaven to consume an offering that they have set up on Mount Carmel. After the priests try all day, Elijah takes his turn and after a short prayer, fire comes down from heaven and the people exclaim in unison that the God of Israel is the true God. Their exclamation - Hashem Hu HaElokim - is included in the final moments of Yom Kippur every year.
