Deciphering the Secret of the Keruvim In this week’s Parasha, Moshe Rabbeinu meticulously accounts for the materials used in constructing the Mishkan. However, a peculiar verb is used—rather than simply stating, “These are the records of the Mishkan,” the Torah employs the term “to redeem” (פקודי), similar to the phrase found in Bereishis 21:1, “And God redeemed Sarah.” Why does the Pasuk use this unusual wording instead of straightforwardly introducing Moshe’s audit? Additionally, while every part of the Mishkan and its vessels is accounted for, there is a notable omission—the Keruvim. Why are they not mentioned in the accounting? The Torah describes their unique design, stating (Shemos 25:20), “The Keruvim shall have their wings spread above, shielding the Kapores with their wings.” This raises a profound question: The Second Commandment explicitly forbids the making of idols or any depictions of human or animal forms, yet Hashem commands Moshe to fashion the Keruvim—which had the form of childlike figures—and place them in the holiest place atop the Aron.
