The Destructive Power of Machlokes Parashat Korach begins with a shocking rebellion. Out of nowhere, Korach—a prominent and respected Levi—rises against Moshe and Aharon, accusing them of deception. The discord he sparks is unlike anything previously seen among the people of Israel. One would expect such a man, especially one of Korach's stature, to consider the consequences of his actions. He had seen the fate of Miriam, who was punished despite good intentions when speaking about Moshe. He knew of the spies, who, though driven by a desire to remain in the spiritual realm of the desert and the Torah of the first Luchos, perished for speaking against the Land. They were all punished harshly, not for malice, but for lapses in judgment. So what was Korach thinking? His motivations were clearly not pure—driven by jealousy and a thirst for honor. Did he not realize he was destroying himself, forfeiting his share in the World to Come? How could he ignore the fact that Moshe ascended Har Sinai, entered the fire, and returned with the Torah? That Hashem spoke with Moshe directly, constantly? How could he challenge Aharon, who had been chosen by Hashem Himself to serve as Kohen Gadol and inaugurate the Mishkan? Even a child would shy away from such a hopeless confrontation. How then did one of Israel’s greatest sages allow himself to be consumed by envy to the point of open rebellion?
