Deciphering Moshe's Secret Message "אֵלֶּה הַדְּבָרִים אֲשֶׁר דִּבֶּר מֹשֶׁה..." “These are the words that Moshe spoke…” (Devarim 1:1) At first glance, these opening words seem straightforward—but they raise two deep and troubling questions: 1. Contradiction of Continuity? The Midrash Rabbah teaches that when the Torah begins with “אֵלֶּה” (“these”), it comes to reject what came before. But Sefer Devarim is a review of the earlier Torah, not a contradiction! Why begin with a word that implies separation, when the book is meant to connect and reinforce? 2. Did Moshe Speak on His Own? Until now, Moshe only spoke what Hashem commanded. But suddenly, here he speaks “from himself”—rebuking the people, recounting history in his own voice. What changed? Even more, the Gemara (Sanhedrin 99a) says that if one claims Moshe said even one verse on his own, it is heresy. So how do we understand Sefer Devarim?
