Secrets of Faith, Destiny, and Legacy! Why does the Torah dedicate an entire parsha to “Lech Lecha” – a command that seems almost too easy to refuse? Hashem, the Master of the Universe, promises wealth, honor, and children to anyone who obeys – who wouldn’t go? Yet this is counted among Avraham’s Ten Trials! If circumcision – the eternal covenant between Hashem and Avraham’s descendants – is far more significant, why isn’t that the foundation of the parsha? And where is the true first trial – the fiery furnace of Ur Kasdim, where a young boy (age 3 or 13!) defies Nimrod, miraculously survives the flames, and hides underground for 13 years in mortal danger? That was the ultimate Kiddush Hashem – so why is it completely absent from the Torah text? The contradictions leap from every verse! Bereshis 11:31 already states that Avraham fled Ur Kasdim with Terah toward Canaan – so how can Hashem later command “from your land” if he had already left? The promise of children should have been irresistible – especially since our Sages teach that Sarah was infertile (aylonit) and Avraham had an ambiguous physical condition (tumtum), and the Talmud (Nedarim 64b) declares: “One without children is considered as if dead”! So why count this journey as a trial at all? And Lot? One verse says “Lot went with him” (implying he joined willingly, hoping to inherit), yet the next says “Avraham took Lot” – did he come freely or was he persuaded? Even the destination raises questions! Hashem says “to the land I will show you” – suggesting Avraham didn’t know where he was headed. Yet the family “set out to go to the land of Canaan” from the very beginning! How could they know the destination before being told? Rashi, Ramban, and the Midrashim debate – was this divine guidance or pure faith in the unknown? And if the furnace miracle – where Avraham challenged Nimrod to make the sun rise in the west – was the ultimate proof of monotheism, why does the Torah omit it entirely?
