“The Secret Life of Sarah" The opening verse of the Parasha is mystifying: “וַיִּהְיוּ חַיֵּי שָׂרָה... וַתָּמׇת שָׂרָה בְּקִרְיַת אַרְבַּע”. Wouldn’t logic dictate that the Torah first tell us of Sarah’s death, and only then record the years of her life? Why does the Torah reverse the order — placing her “life” before her passing — and emphasize her “years of life” twice, as if to tell us not to read the verse literally? Even more puzzling: why specify that she died “in Kiryat Arba, which is Hebron, in the land of Canaan”, Surely one already knows Hebron’s location? What is the Torah hinting by stressing that her soul departed specifically in Eretz Canaan, while Avraham was still in Be’er Sheva, the territory of the Philistines? Could it be that the Torah is revealing that her final moment was itself an ascent — the return of the Shechinah to the sacred soil of Israel? Perhaps “חַיֵּי שָׂרָה” does not describe her lifespan but her true life — the spiritual vitality that transcends death. The Torah counts her years because every moment of her life was fully lived, sanctified, and complete. Sarah’s body may have expired in Hebron, but her days — her holiness — continued to shine from the Land of Canaan, where divine life flows eternally. Join us for this shiur as we uncover, through the Zohar and the Arizal, the mystery of Sarah’s life after life — why her death begins a Parasha named “The Life of Sarah,” and how her life will define the journey of the Bnei Yisrael till Mashiach.
