The Secret of the Wells Our parasha opens with a striking puzzle. Chazal teach in Midrash Tanchuma that Hashem prevented Yitzchak from descending to Egypt because he was born in Eretz Canaan and possessed a unique sanctity bound to the Land. Yet Yaakov, who was likewise born in Canaan, is explicitly commanded to descend to Egypt. What deeper distinction between father and son is the Torah hinting to? Even more mysterious is Yitzchak’s journey to the land of the Philistines. If he was barred from leaving Eretz Yisrael for Egypt, one would expect his presence among the Philistines to fulfill some elevated spiritual purpose. Instead, the Torah describes him doing something seemingly mundane—digging the very wells that Avraham’s servants had dug and the Philistines had stopped up after Avraham’s death. Why does the Torah invest so many pesukim in these details? Compounding the mystery, the Philistines’ act of stopping the wells harmed only themselves. So why should Yitzchak exert himself to reopen them? Would Hashem truly send a tzaddik to toil for the sake of resha’im punishing themselves? And why does Yitzchak begin by digging the wells himself, only later delegating the work to his servants? If servants were appropriate for the task, why not employ them from the outset, as Avraham had done? Finally, what sense is there in digging wells in a valley—precisely the place where flowing water is naturally abundant? Why go through the trouble of drawing up water when “living water” is already available?
