The Journey That Wasn’t Supposed to Begin… Again Why does the Torah open Parashat Vayetzei with the words וַיֵּצֵא יַעֲקֹב מִבְּאֵר שֶׁבַע וַיֵּלֶךְ חָרָנָה? We already knew twice in Parashat Toldot that Yaakov fled to Charan/Paddan-Aram because of Eisav’s threat and his parents’ command! The Torah even sealed the story with the pasuk וַיִּשְׁמַע יַעֲקֹב אֶל אָבִיו וְאֶל אִמּוֹ וַיֵּלֶךְ פַּדָּנָה אֲרָם. So why repeat that he “went out” and “went to Charan” as if the journey is only beginning now? And why the strange expression וַיִּשָּׂא יַעֲקֹב רַגְלָיו – “Yaakov lifted his feet”? Of course he had to lift his feet to walk! What new dimension of departure is the Torah hinting at? Then, suddenly, the destination changes its name: instead of Charan, the pasuk calls it אַרְצָה בְנֵי קֶדֶם – “the land of the Easterners.” Why this mysterious title? Is Yaakov walking toward a location, or toward a spiritual confrontation with the ancient roots of evil that began “in the East” with Kayin, the Sodomites, and the Tower of Babel? Finally, the moment he arrives, Yaakov encounters the famous well covered by a huge stone that all the shepherds together can barely roll away. Common sense screams: why seal a vital water source with a rock so heavy that everyone has to wait for everyone else, water the flocks one by one, and then laboriously replace the stone? What were they so afraid of? And why does the Torah repeat five times that the stone was עַל פִּי הַבְּאֵר – “on the mouth of the well”?
