In Parashat Vayeshev, we confront one of the Torah's most perplexing mysteries: How could Yaakov's righteous sons—merciful descendants of merciful patriarchs, who later became the holy chariot for the Divine Presence—display such shocking cruelty toward their brother Yosef? They witnessed his soul's anguish, heard his desperate pleas from the pit, yet hardened their hearts and refused to listen. Even more astonishing, they showed no regard for the unbearable pain their actions would inflict on their father Yaakov. At first glance, this seems like unimaginable brutality from the tribes of Israel. The brothers themselves later suspected that all their sufferings in Egypt stemmed from their failure to show mercy to Yosef, as they confessed: "We are indeed guilty concerning our brother, for we saw the distress of his soul when he pleaded with us, yet we did not listen" (Bereshit 42:21). How could such compassionate souls, destined for greatness, become so callous toward a brother's cries and their father's impending heartbreak? A deeper wonder arises from the Midrash Tanchuma (Vayeshev 2:5): Since a ban requires ten people and Reuven was absent, only nine brothers remained. What did they do? They included the Holy One, Blessed be He, to complete the minyan of ten—and because of this divine inclusion, God did not reveal the truth to Yaakov. How could the Almighty possibly "agree" to participate in a decision that appears to violate Torah principles? Finally, Yehuda overturns the court’s death sentence by proposing to sell Yosef, arguing, "For he is our brother, our flesh." Yet if kinship spares him from death, how can it justify selling him—a fate potentially worse than execution?
