The Secret Power of Krias Shema Why did Yaakov Avinu seek to reveal the ketz—the end of days—if Hashem Himself chose to conceal it from all of creation? Rashi tells us that Yaakov wished to disclose the ketz, but the Shechinah departed from him. This raises a sharp question: had Hashem wanted the secret revealed, He could have done so directly. What did Yaakov believe would be gained by uncovering what Heaven had hidden? Even more puzzling is Yaakov’s reaction. When prophecy left him, he began to suspect his sons, wondering whether some hidden spiritual flaw prevented the revelation. Why did it not occur to him that perhaps Hashem simply did not agree with revealing the ketz? Especially when Yaakov had learned this lesson from his own father, Yitzchak Avinu, who knew Yosef was alive yet remained silent, sensing that it was not the Divine will for Yaakov to know. Chazal deepen the mystery further by teaching that Hashem Himself “calculated the ketz,” and yet chose to hide it. And the Midrash adds a striking conclusion: because of this very episode, Bnei Yisrael merited to recite Keriat Shema every morning and evening for all generations. What is the connection between an unfulfilled attempt to reveal the end of days and the daily mitzvah of Shema Yisrael? Join the shiur to uncover the inner meaning of this episode and the hidden link between the ketz and Keriat Shema. Drawing on the Zohar and the teachings of the Ari HaKadosh, we will explore what was truly unfolding beneath the surface—and how this moment shaped Jewish faith for all time.
