Steve "Shlomo" Zakheim was a Flatbush businessman, community activist, and longtime Hatzolah volunteer who changed what the organization could do. Before him, Hatzolah volunteers weren't trained as paramedics. He set the precedent that they could be, and the standard he established still shapes the service today. His path into emergency medicine came through business: he founded Metropolitan Ambulance in the 1980s, later merged into the national company Transcare. But the work that defined him wasn't the company. It was the calls. On September 11, 2001, Zakheim was at Ground Zero as a Hatzolah volunteer — evacuating people from a hotel in the collapse zone and carrying an injured firefighter to safety. Away from the ambulance, he arranged transport for critically ill children to hospitals around the world, supported Camp Simcha and Chai Lifeline, and built his own foundation modeled on Make-A-Wish.
