On what seemed like an ordinary summer day, July 29, several business owners along 13th Avenue reached out to Boro Park Shomrim after realizing they had fallen victim to the same scam. Two individuals entered multiple stores looking to purchase expensive electronic items. When it came time to pay, they claimed they didn’t have cash and offered to send the money through Zelle. Moments later, the store owners received what appeared to be payment confirmations by text message and email. Everything looked legitimate. But it wasn’t. The messages were fake, and the suspects walked away with the merchandise before anyone realized the money had never been sent. As additional reports came in, Shomrim quickly recognized a pattern. A coordinated team was assembled, and investigators learned the suspects would be returning to pick up more merchandise. Members positioned themselves throughout the area and kept the suspects under constant observation, carefully following their movements while coordinating in real time with the NYPD.
