Time after time David actually has a chance to kill Saul but refuses to lay a hand on him. A number of times when David had a chance to kill Saul he pleads with him to understand that he means him no harm. Saul each time acknowledges he is wrong but immediately after pursues David again. These stories are part of the complex psychological reality that has besieged King Saul.
