In the Torah portion, Moshe sends messengers to a number of nations asking permission to peacefully travel through them in order to enter the Land of Israel. In all cases his request was rejected. In the Haftorah, hundreds of years later, Yiftach also sends messengers in order to avoid a war. In the end Yiftach is also rebuffed and in the subsequent war he subdues Israel's enemies.
