The opening chapter describes the imminent death of King David and how one of his sons, Adoniyahu, declared himself King with the hope of maintaining that position as soon as his father would pass away. Yet David had already promised his wife, Batsheva, that her son Solomon would rule. In the midst of great intrigue that is in fact what occurs and King David declares that his son Solomon will rule in his place and he is immediately anointed king. Adoniyahu has no choice but to relinquish his plan.
