Tanya Chapter 13: The Inner Judges of Elul | Miriam Cohen

The Tanya says something surprising about the struggle inside us. The two impulses we carry, the pull toward fear and the pull toward love, are not our rulers. They are our judges. Each one presents its opinion, and neither one gets the final word. In this class we continue into Chapter 13 and stay with the Benoni, the in-between person. The Benoni is not someone who has stopped struggling. He feels both pulls fully. What makes him the master of choice is the small window between the impulse and the response, and the willingness to notice it. Then the Tanya adds something tender. There is a third judge, and that judge is G-d Himself, who comes to help the good in us. On our own the voice of fear can feel so physical and so loud that we are sure it will win. But a small candle lights up a whole dark room. All of this lands differently in Elul, the month when the King is in the field. G-d does not wait for us in the palace, dressed in our finest and behaving perfectly. He comes out to meet us where we actually are, in our ordinary clothes, in the mud and in the mess. If you take one thing from this class, let it be this. G-d is rooting for the good in you to win.
