This class is based on Likutey Moharan Lesson 24: In Parshat Ki Tetze, five consecutive mitzvot form a spiritual progression: shiluach haken (sending away the mother bird), ma’akeh (building a protective fence), kilay ha-kerem (forbidden mixtures in a vineyard), the prohibition against plowing with an ox and donkey together and Tzitzit. Rebbe Nachman teaches that mitzvot performed with simcha (joy) extract holiness trapped in the forces of impurity, creating spiritual momentum, bringing blessing, elevating the intellect and ultimately opening the way to the Keter and Hashem’s Infinite Light. Each of these five mitzvot corresponds to one stage of that ascent, culminating in Tzitzit, the garment through which a Jew can connect to the Infinite Light. The lesson is to appreciate the immense spiritual potential hidden within even a seemingly simple mitzvah and perform it with genuine simcha.
