Rabbi Akiva on AI: What Makes Humans Different From Robots

Welcome to our weekly class on Pirkei Avot (Ethics of the Fathers): Chapter 3, Mishna 14 Are you just a more advanced animal — or something else entirely? What actually separates a human being from an angel, an animal, or even an AI that can out-think you? This week's class opens Rabbi Akiva's teaching in Pirkei Avot 3:14: "Beloved is man, for he was created in the image of God. Especially beloved is he, for it was made known to him that he was created in the image of God, as it is said, 'for in the image of God He made man'" (Genesis 9:6). Rabbi Greenberg unpacks what "created in the image of God" (Tzelem Elokim) actually means — not as a single idea, but through roughly half a dozen classical interpretations, each answering a different version of the same question: what makes a human being irreplaceable?
