What happens when we don't know the right words to speak to Hashem? In this powerful teaching for Rosh Hashanah, I begin with the sound of the Shofar and share two profound stories of the Baal Shem Tov that reveal a beautiful secret about prayer, sincerity, and our relationship with Hashem. In the first story, the Baal Shem Tov is praying on Yom Kippur when he becomes deeply concerned about whether the community's prayers will be accepted. Then, a simple shepherd boy enters the shul and begins blowing the Shofar. His innocent, heartfelt cry through the Shofar seems to disrupt everything—but the Baal Shem Tov becomes reassured. In the second story, a prince is separated from his father, the king, for so long that he eventually forgets the language of the royal palace. When he finally returns, he cannot even ask to see his father. He has forgotten the words. So he simply cries. And that cry reaches the heart of the king. These two stories teach us something profound about the Shofar—and about ourselves. Sometimes we have the "instrument." Sometimes we have the words. And sometimes all we have is a cry from the depths of our heart. Perhaps that is one of the deepest messages of the Shofar: Hashem does not need us to have perfect words. He wants us to turn to Him sincerely. 00:00 – Introduction to the Mystery of the Shofar 01:18 – Understanding the Different Sounds: Tekiah, Shevarim, and Teruah 01:49 – The First Story: The Shepherd’s Simple Cry on Yom Kippur 04:02 – How a Heartfelt Sound Can Evoke Divine Mercy 06:03 – The Shofar as the Voice of a Soul in Pain 08:14 – The Second Story: The Parable of the Lost Prince and the King 11:09 – Why the King Recognizes the Sound of His Son’s Voice 12:18 – The Desire to Return to the Palace: Connecting Without Words 13:39 – Lessons from the Shofar When It Falls on Shabbat 14:41 – Two Relationships with Hashem: The Shepherd and the Prince 16:46 – Final Thoughts and a Call to Connection May the sound of the Shofar awaken something deep within each of us and bring us closer to our Father in Heaven.
