Everything You Need to Know About Rosh Hashanah!

Shalom Aleichem Chevra, and Shana Tova! What if you could hold all of Rosh Hashanah in just three ideas — and actually feel them throughout the entire two days? In this shiur, we break down Rosh Hashanah into three core ideas drawn from the teachings of Ripy Zilberg Schlita, so that wherever we are during the Yom Tov — in davening, at the suda, hearing the shofar — we have something real and practical to hold onto. The first idea is that Rosh Hashanah is called Yom Teruah — the day of will, the day of ratzon. We talk about what it actually means to align ourselves with Hashem's will and His plan for the world: the ingathering of the exiles, the dissipation of evil, Mashiach, the resurrection of the dead. We open up the machzor and see that the davening is absolutely packed with this vision. Yom Teruah is simply the day we say: Hashem, I choose Your plan. The second idea is rosh l'shanah — Rosh Hashanah is the head, and the rest of the year is the body, and the body follows the head. We talk about how every minute of these 48 hours is building the DNA of the entire year ahead, like planting a seed or laying down the roots and trunk of a mighty tree. And we also cover the healthy way to hold this idea — without falling into nervousness or anxiety — because the saddikim teach us that every single minute of Rosh Hashanah contains all the minutes of Rosh Hashanah. The third idea is the incredible power each of us has on this day: through our actions during Rosh Hashanah, we literally move Hashem, so to speak, from the throne of judgment to the throne of compassion. That is not a small thing. We also touch on the special situation this year with Rosh Hashanah falling on Shabbat, why we blow the shofar only on the second day, and how the singing, the simcha, and the Shabbat itself become our shofar on the first day.
