Prophesies for new year from Jerusalem

Shalom Aleichem Chevra, and welcome back — we are so glad you're here! Did you know that Moshe Rabbeinu called the heavens and the earth as witnesses to a prophecy that stretches all the way to the days of Mashiach — and that we read it every single year right before Rosh Hashanah? In this shiur we dive deep into Parshat Haazinu, one of the most powerful and layered parshiyot in the entire Torah. Moshe Rabbeinu isn't just singing a poem here — he's delivering prophecy. Real, technical prophetic information about what's coming for the Jewish nation from his time all the way until Mashiach. We go slow and really lean into every word because this stuff is too important to rush. We open by asking a question that Rashi himself asks: why does Moshe call out to the heavens and the earth to be witnesses before he even begins? Moshe knew he was about to die. He needed witnesses that would still be around to carry out the terms of the covenant — and the heavens and the earth aren't going anywhere. As Rashi explains, the same witnesses who hear the musar are the ones who carry out the reward or the punishment. Rain, dew, wind, the fruits of the earth — all of it is connected to whether we're holding up our end of the deal. We then spend real time in verse two, where Moshe compares the Torah to rain and to dew. Rain is bigger blessing, but not everyone is always happy when it rains. Dew? Everybody loves dew. Every blade of grass, every rosebush — dew just makes everyone happy. That's the Torah. It's your real drip, your sustenance for eternity. And then we get into the winds — how after rain the winds come and make the crops stand tall, and how the Torah functions as that wind for us too, lifting us up and giving us roots. We close with a beautiful picture of what all this is building toward: the days of Mashiach, the return of all wealth and wisdom to Jerusalem, the world to come, and what it means that Hashem is called the Rock whose actions are perfect. From the ten utterances of creation lining up with the ten plagues in Egypt to the Ten Commandments that followed — everything Hashem does is precise, measured, and just. The heavens and the earth are watching. The covenant is still in place. And the prophecies of Haazinu are very much alive for us right now.
