The Structure of Selichos – A Second Shemoneh Esrei? | Daily Halacha #83

When we say Selichos, we’re not just reciting extra prayers before the Yamim Noraim. The Levush teaches that Selichos was designed with the same structure as Shemoneh Esrei. It begins with Ashrei—our version of Pesukei D’Zimrah—praising Hashem before making requests. The heart of Selichos is built around the Yud Gimmel Middos HaRachamim, just as the 13 blessings in the middle of Shemoneh Esrei correspond to them. And like Shemoneh Esrei, Selichos concludes with Kaddish Tiskabel, asking Hashem to accept our tefillos.
