Why We Don’t Talk Between the Shofar Blasts | Daily Halacha #85

When the Shofar is blown on Rosh Hashanah, there are two sets of Tekios: Tekios Demeyushav and Tekios Demeumad. The first is a Minhag, intended, as Chazal say, to confuse the Satan. The second is the main Mitzvah, sounded during Mussaf in the blessings of Malchiyos, Zichronos, and Shofaros. Halacha teaches us that once the first Tekiah is blown, no talking is allowed until the very last blast is complete. But why is this so strict, when in other Mitzvos — like eating in the sukkah or checking for chametz — speech is permitted in between? In this Daily Halacha, we’ll explore the words of the Rif, the Ran, the Tur, and the Taz, and see how the Rema concludes: since the Rosh Yeshiva taught us to refrain from speech, we follow that ruling.
