Before the Shofar is blown on Rosh Hashanah, what Kavanah should we have in mind? Halacha teaches us that there are two sets of blasts, Tekios D’Meyushav and Tekios D’Meumad, each with a different purpose. The first confuses the Satan, while the second, during Mussaf, elevates our prayers of Malchiyos, Zichronos, and Shofaros to the heavens. But beyond that, Chazal and the Rishonim debate: is the mitzvah primarily to hear the shofar (lishmoa kol shofar, Rambam) or to blow the shofar (litkoa bashofar, Rabbeinu Tam)? If hearing is the mitzvah, why do we need a proper Baal Tokea? If blowing is the mitzvah, why doesn’t each of us blow for ourselves? In this Daily Halacha, Rabbi Yaacov Haber explains how we resolve this — by making the baal tokea our shaliach. Having that in mind before the shofar is blown helps us fulfill the mitzvah according to all opinions. 💬 Got a question or thought about today’s halacha?
