Why Do We Pray When We Do? | Daily Halacha #87

Why do we daven Shacharis in the morning, Mincha in the afternoon, and Maariv at night? The Gemara gives two famous answers: either because our Tefillos were established by Avraham, Yitzchak, and Yaakov, or because they were modeled after the Korbanos brought in the Beis Hamikdash. This isn’t just a history lesson. The Shulchan Aruch rules that prayer is in place of Korbanos, and therefore, many Halachos like standing, fixed place, proper dress, and full Kavanah, come directly from the laws of sacrifices. The Magen Avraham, however, holds that our Tefillos are rooted in the Avos, and the Halachos are based on Kavod Hashem, not Korbanos.
