The Torah portion of Chukat offers our first glimpse of the new generation of the Children of Israel, who will be entering into the Promised Land. 38 years have gone quietly by since the incidents of the spies and the rebellion of Korach, recorded in the previous portions, and the Generation of the Desert has now passed away in the wilderness, as punishment for the sin of the spies. But this new generation is markedly different than its predecessor, and behaves in a new and entirely different way…and the new generation will be seeking out G-d’s presence in this world, and serving Him, in an unprecedented, proactive way…issuing a challenge to us, and bringing home a life-changing lesson for our own time.
